A [hot] Mid-Summer Night’s Dream ~ How to say “I Do” in the Texas Sun

Bridesmaids colorful dresses fans

You’re engaged and and you just booked the venue for your dream wedding. But in a frenzy of wedding excitement, you forgot how balmy Summertime can be in Texas and now your August wedding date has you sweating it a little. Don’t worry — we’ve put together a quick list of tried and true Summer Wedding Do’s & Don’ts to keep you calm, cool and collected.

Regardless of rising mercury levels, couples say “I do” year round in Austin — even under the hot Texas sun of mid-July and August. Keep in mind: while natives to the Lone Star State may be acclimated to the hot hot heat, our climate can come as a shock to the system for out-of-state guests and wedding party members.

For soon-to-be-wed (or planning ahead) Summer brides, here are some planning tips to keep you and your guests happy:

  1. The dress: Keep it simple. Forgo a heavily-beaded gown, full skirt or long train for a simple frock in a light, breezy fabric in organza or cotton eyelet. Apply this rule to the bridesmaids’ dresses too: tea length, strapless and light fabrics will keep your girls from overheating at the altar. Sandals will help keep them head-to-toe calm, cool and collected. And regarding the Cowboy boot trend (which we love): boots are best reserved for Fall, since they don’t breathe well in a heat wave.
  2. The ceremony: Outdoor Summer ceremonies here are best kept short and sweet. So when working with your officiant on the ceremony script, consider just how long you want your guests exposed to the elements (especially the men in dark suits). That third solo might be better off nixed from the program.
  3. Day-of preparation: Hydrate, but not with booze please. Here’s the lowdown on alcohol and heat: Alcohol makes you dehydrated and dehydration makes you prone to exhaustion, swelling and redness in the face. Basically, a whole host of less than pretty health issues that don’t mix well with wedding day. Save your celebration drinks for the reception.
  4. Your guests: Keep ‘em happy by offering cold bottled water, Aqua Frescas or fresh lemonade upon arrival. Pre-ceremony cocktails could make your guests prone to the same issues mentioned above: dehydration, heat exhaustion, fainting and nausea. Do them a favor by saving the adult drinks for after the “I dos.” Also, provide plenty of shade (and fans!) throughout the ceremony. Big oak trees make for gorgeous photos, so consider both the landscape and position of the sun at the time of your ceremony when you scope out your special spot.
  5. The menu: Again, light & summery. Think green salads or a Caprese. A yummy Gazpacho. Small plates that focus on fresh fruits and vegetables. For dessert, fresh berries with cream. Gelato and Sorbet taste like Summer. At the bar, go with citrus-centric refreshments: blood-orange margaritas, mojitos or white sangria anyone?

Congrats to all of our Summer 2010 couples! Your weddings were fabulous and you didn’t even break a sweat :)

Keep cool, Austin.

90% of you are reading this from work

brideBLISSAMANDA

You can’t find your keyboard underneath six months of Brides and Martha Stewart Weddings, not to mention all the seating chart stickies and invitation revisions that have hijacked your workspace. The corkboard at your desk is littered with bridal inspiration. And your lunch hour has turned into a to lunch “two hours.” When else can you get to cake tastings, fittings and floral meetings?

Sound familiar, working girls?

Well, according to a new poll released Friday by Reuters, wedding-related work distractions are totally normal (if not rampant). The survey revealed 90 percent of brides-to-be plan the wedding from work.

Cover = blown.

The poll, conducted by TheKnot, WeddingChannel and ForbesWoman, spilled the beans:

  • 9 of 10 women confessed to using some company time to make wedding plans
  • 30 percent of them believed that their work was negatively affected by it
  • 20 percent of women admit that more than half of their wedding arrangements were done at work
  • 41 percent said they did it whenever they could
  • 15 percent said that someone at work had commented about it (oops!)
  • Most brides feel like they’re pulling all the weight, with few planning contributions from the guys

We’ve all been there — juggling a career and planning a wedding is no cakewalk. And unfortunately, most supervisors are not too sympathetic to the wedding-planning agendas of their would-be diligent employees.

But not to worry, your friendly Austin wedding planners want to help take the load off (and out of your cubicles). And you don’t have to give up creative control, either — it’s our job to make your vision come to life. Let us help you button up your wedding plans while you’re on the job, so can still shine at work! Oh, and so you’ll still have a job waiting for you after the honeymoon…

So here’s our advice to working girls… Save your job, call a planner!

Behind the Scenes ~ My Summer at BZ

BZ events team

It’s been a busy summer at BZ events — lots of fabulous weddings (pics to come!) and we could not have done it without our amazing team, including our awesome interns. We had a rock star UT intern this summer, Caroline, who is about to head back to school. Sad face. Caroline is wise beyond her years + a super hard worker.

We asked Caroline what she learned this summer — how did her perception of the wedding industry compare to the reality she saw while working with us this summer? Did she have any “behind the scenes” lessons for future brides? What advice would she give her friends who are getting married?

Below are a few of Caroline’s thoughts, which we think are great lessons for future brides and grooms… enjoy!

My time as a BZ intern is sadly coming to as close as the end of summer draws near. Coming into my internship, my idea of wedding planning was very stereotypical, based on the movies and TV shows I’ve seen over the years. I could not have been more naive, and I have learned so much by being thrown into event planning this summer. The only way to really learn about this industry is to be immersed in it. I have loved every second of my time here. Okay… some moments have been longer and harder than others, but I’ve still loved it!

Here are a few pieces of advice I have picked up on during my time at BZ that I thought I would pass along:

Savor the moments of YOUR big day. It’s going to fly by and so much happens. It is such a special time that you have probably been looking forward to for a year, if not for much longer, so enjoy every part of it and really soak it all up. Why else did you put so much time and money into it?

If you’re handing over the control, actually do it! If you’re hiring a planner for your wedding (which is something else I have learned, you DEFINITELY need a wedding planner/coordinator!!), let her be in charge, especially on the big day. If you try to be in charge the day of and concern yourself with all of the little details, part of the motivation for hiring a planner is gone. You should be able to relax as much as possible and really enjoy your day without being bothered by the little things.

Enjoy the people. You are with the most loving and supportive crowd ever on your wedding day. All of your family and friends have come to Austin to see and celebrate you, which is so special. Remember this and really take advantage of this time to catch up with the guests.

A few more thoughts… It really is such a great experience to be working behind the scenes at a wedding. I can’t believe how hard the wedding vendors work behind the scenes. So much of the magic goes unseen! The work is hard and tiring, but it is so rewarding at the same time. I really love getting to meet the couples and their families and learn about them. It is a lot of fun to see each couple’s personality displayed in the event. And I have seen so many creative ideas from a live photo booth to a chocolate bar to beautiful custom-made bridesmaids dresses.

The amount of work that goes into an event leading up to the day and especially the day before and morning of is immense. Who knew it would take so long to just throw linens and set out place cards? But each individual task takes a long time to make sure it is done right. At the end of the day, though, it is all worth it when we get to stand back and watch the couple enjoying themselves with their friends and family at a beautiful event.

I would trust everyone on BZ’s team with my own wedding, so I would of course recommend them to you, too!

Caroline — thank you for your thoughts and for all of your hard work this summer. You are awesome!!

Summer Loving ~ White Sangria

Sarah and Steve are getting married this weekend and their signature cocktail is White Sangria, as in “Sarah & Steve’s Sangria” … cute, right? Their wedding is going to be a lovely Vintage Vineyard affair out at Flat Creek Estates + we can’t wait to share Amelia’s fabulous pictures with you! These two are as sweet as can be and it’s going to be a super fun wedding.

Until then, here’s our favorite summery Sangria recipe that we’ll be enjoying on Sunday post-wedding. I love all the fresh fruits and refreshing kick. It’s almost healthy. Ha. Wishful thinking!

SMS Photography SangriaSummer Sangria

INGREDIENTS:

1 bottle white wine — this weekend, we are using Flat Creek’s Buckin’ Horse White. Say that three times fast.

½ cup orange liqueur

1-½ cup lemonade

3 whole kiwis, peeled + thinly sliced. Save a few for the garnish!

1 whole large green apple with skin, cored + thinly sliced

1 whole orange, thinly sliced

1-½ cup green seedless grapes, halved

PREP:

In a large pitcher, combine all ingredients and stir. Allow mix to chill for at least an hour so the flavors can combine. BZ tip — it’s better if you allow it to sit overnight. Serve over ice + enjoy!! Perfect after a long day, or really, any Austin summer day.

Happy wedding weekend to Sarah + Steve. And to Marisa + Geoff, as well!!

BZ behind the scenes…

So…. what do event planners do when they aren’t planning their next unforgettable event or amazing wedding?

Royal Fig Catering Rojo Pictures

Ha! We aren’t telling, but we wanted to share a few pictures and say thank you to our friends at Royal Fig Catering for hosting one of our BZ staff meetings earlier this Spring. They generously opened up their fabulous kitchen and prepared some delicious nibbles for our team. Spicy shrimp shooters, local cheeses, masa cakes with black beans & shredded pork… Yum! It’s definitely time for lunch over here.

Royal Fig has a great studio space over in Westlake, which they share with Stardust Pastry and Rojo Pictures. So, of course, Thomas snapped a few “behind the scenes” pics. A photographer without his camera? Never.

Kelly + Sean’s “Things We Love” Austin Wedding

One of the MANY reasons we love our job is because each and every one of our clients is so different! We love working with clients who aim to push boundaries in decor trends, surprise their guests with a fun-infused menu and frankly… do things their own way.

Recently we had the privilege of working with a totally unconventional + amazingly fun bride and groom, Kelly + Sean. The theme of their wedding day was “Things We Love” and there wasn’t a single detail included in their wedding day they weren’t head over heels for! They decided to throw tradition to the wind and to only incorporate elements that reflected their combined interests. We LOVE that.

A few of their Austin wedding faves — awesome 80s music, whiskey, nostalgia, awesome dance parties and the Ludera family PIG ROAST, brought on by a tradition the groom shared with his grandfather. Grandpa was also a groomsman — see below. Sweetest thing ever!

Cheers to Kelly + Sean!! Thank you for having us on board for your super fun wedding — we had a blast. And the truffle popcorn… delish!
