You’re engaged and and you just booked the venue for your dream wedding. But in a frenzy of wedding excitement, you forgot how balmy Summertime can be in Texas and now your August wedding date has you sweating it a little. Don’t worry — we’ve put together a quick list of tried and true Summer Wedding Do’s & Don’ts to keep you calm, cool and collected.
Regardless of rising mercury levels, couples say “I do” year round in Austin — even under the hot Texas sun of mid-July and August. Keep in mind: while natives to the Lone Star State may be acclimated to the hot hot heat, our climate can come as a shock to the system for out-of-state guests and wedding party members.
For soon-to-be-wed (or planning ahead) Summer brides, here are some planning tips to keep you and your guests happy:
- The dress: Keep it simple. Forgo a heavily-beaded gown, full skirt or long train for a simple frock in a light, breezy fabric in organza or cotton eyelet. Apply this rule to the bridesmaids’ dresses too: tea length, strapless and light fabrics will keep your girls from overheating at the altar. Sandals will help keep them head-to-toe calm, cool and collected. And regarding the Cowboy boot trend (which we love): boots are best reserved for Fall, since they don’t breathe well in a heat wave.
- The ceremony: Outdoor Summer ceremonies here are best kept short and sweet. So when working with your officiant on the ceremony script, consider just how long you want your guests exposed to the elements (especially the men in dark suits). That third solo might be better off nixed from the program.
- Day-of preparation: Hydrate, but not with booze please. Here’s the lowdown on alcohol and heat: Alcohol makes you dehydrated and dehydration makes you prone to exhaustion, swelling and redness in the face. Basically, a whole host of less than pretty health issues that don’t mix well with wedding day. Save your celebration drinks for the reception.
- Your guests: Keep ‘em happy by offering cold bottled water, Aqua Frescas or fresh lemonade upon arrival. Pre-ceremony cocktails could make your guests prone to the same issues mentioned above: dehydration, heat exhaustion, fainting and nausea. Do them a favor by saving the adult drinks for after the “I dos.” Also, provide plenty of shade (and fans!) throughout the ceremony. Big oak trees make for gorgeous photos, so consider both the landscape and position of the sun at the time of your ceremony when you scope out your special spot.
- The menu: Again, light & summery. Think green salads or a Caprese. A yummy Gazpacho. Small plates that focus on fresh fruits and vegetables. For dessert, fresh berries with cream. Gelato and Sorbet taste like Summer. At the bar, go with citrus-centric refreshments: blood-orange margaritas, mojitos or white sangria anyone?
Congrats to all of our Summer 2010 couples! Your weddings were fabulous and you didn’t even break a sweat :)
Keep cool, Austin.
